Savita Bhabhi a Comic Character That Has Broken Indian Sexual Mores

About 2 years back Puneet Agarwal launched a comic sextoon character titled ‘Savita Bhabhi’. The character by western standards is tame, but for Indians starved of sex on the screen has lapped up the character en masse, as can be seen from the fact that the character garnered 60 million hits in just two months of its launch. Many foreigners from the USA,UK and Canada accessed the site.

India was known as a land steeped in obscurantism and taboo. Despite the Hindu religion advocating a path to God through sex, through Tantra the Indians by and large considered sex a taboo word. This is a dichotomy that has never been explained and perhaps difficult to understand. Thus the government and the authorities frown on sex ads and magazines and it is no surprise that ‘Playboy’ magazine is banned in India for the last 60 years, though the erotic sculptures of Khujaraho are advertised as an example of Indian art. As is well known these sculptors from the 12th century and depict men and women in various poses of carnal embrace.

Newton’s third law states that action and reaction are twins that go together Thus the actions of the Indian government and the so called mass leaders against depiction of sex has been challenged by a man of Indian origin in the UK. He is Puneet Agarwal a Bania by caste. Bania’s are a business community, but Puneet has branched out into the world of cartoons with a sexual tinge.

About 2 years back he launched a comic sextoon character titled ‘Savita Bhabhi’. What does this show? It shows the masses do not think the way the Indian government thinks, as the Government of India banned the site within 2 months of its launch. The reason given was laughable as the official notification said the site was a threat to the security of India.

The site in cartoon form narrates the sexual adventures of a bored house wife in the absence of her husband who is away to work. The site has now changed its name and is still alive on the net.

The character ‘Savita Bhabhi’ has led to a revolution of sorts in Indian media and the site is now available in many regional languages like Hindi and Tamil. In addition an entire set of video episodes are available on You tube. The character has also found its way from the net to print media and Savita Bhabhi comics are available for sale in Hindi and Tamil.
